Título: Translating English into Portuguese in excerpts of "The Picture of Dorian Gray" through the lens of Graduation
Autores: Vivian Gomes Monteiro Souza e Profa. Dra. Vanúbia Araújo Laulate Moncayo
ResumeTranslation studies have developed systematic paradigm shifts in the past decades. Switching from a pedagogical approach which did not cover the relation between grammar and context to a functionalist perspective, the grammatical tools employed to “retextuing” when translating are now viewed and analyzed in terms of how language is used within a given context of situation and context of culture. Of a theoretical-methodological approach, this work aims to show how Graduation resources within Appraisal Theory applicable to literary texts have proven being helpful in translating these types of text from English (Source text) to Portuguese (target text) language, in a way that retextualization accurately depicts the ideas conveyed in the source text. The research data include five excerpts taken from “The Picture of Dorian Gray”, one of the classical literature books of Oscar Wilde. The criterion for choosing these five excerpts is explained by the fact that some of the Portuguese translated versions available on the net do not cover the sense of gradability carried by some given words in the source text (English), which, in some sense, compromise the meanings to be built in the target text; that is to say, the “reality” built in the target text does not necessarily reflect that of the source-text. As conceptualized by Martin and White (2005), the attitudinal meanings are established by the property of gradability; Through this principle, it is possible to identify how lower or higher is the investment of the writer in the discourse. This property reveals how the syntagma is reconstrued according to the value position of the elements within a grading scale of positivity or negativity. The results have shown that the employment of Graduation resources to (re) textualization/translation (Source Text – Target-Text) has proven that every part of the syntagmatic structure in a text has a semantics potential which carries some degree of intensity and quantity based on the speaker´s intention in an orderly syntagmatic order and that the lexical choices the translator makes within a paradigmatic axis is of paramount importance to make the writer´s voice in the source text be heard in the target text.

Parabéns, a universidade, o curso e o GP estão felizes com sua participação. Que venham os próximos eventos e que mais colegas possam participar também!! Sucesso!!
